Tribute to my dear mother in law (and colleague!)
I first met Mrs Reid (and that was she was know as by all her colleagues at that time- I was so shocked when I heard people she worked with calling her ‘Alice’ a few years later!) in 1977. I started my 3rd placement at Stoke Park Hospital on South A ward in June where she had been working for a few years by then.
We didn’t meet immediately – I think she must have been on holiday for my first week- and when we first encountered one another it didn’t go well! We had a brief argument actually within the first hour of our early shift together and subsequently although we worked amicably side by side supporting people for the next few weeks we hardly ever exchanged any conversation
Nonetheless I found out several years later that I had made a favourable impression on this rather reserved and formidable lady because she had gone home after her shift and told granny that she was ‘working with a nice little white boy with a mus- mus face’!
I think the disparity between my perception of our relationship during my placement on South A and the reality was due to her capacity to look beyond the superficial nature of people and relationships and appreciate others for their deeper qualities
I had many conversations with her about her work life over the last few months; she often referred to me as jokingly as her ‘colleague’ even though we only worked together for a few weeks all those years ago. She looked back with great affection and pride on the years that she spent supporting people with learning disabilities and clearly missed the sense of companionship and shared purpose derived from working with her many colleagues at Stoke Park and in the care homes she visited during the latter part of her career
She was a very popular member of the teams that she worked in throughout her working life. Everyone remembers her with considerable affection and a common theme was how helpful and supportive she was towards new and young staff.
Relatives of people she supported got to know her and trust her especially when she worked on Frazer Roberts ward which was a service catering for young people who had had troubled lives.
More importantly the people that she supported loved and trusted her. She was a very capable and versatile carer. For example, when she worked on South A she was mainly caring for elderly and sometimes quite severely disabled people but a few years later she worked with younger people who were much more able and active and also were rather volatile due to their poor
mental health. She was very adept at maintaining calm and positive relationships with everyone she supported and they all loved and respected her. She especially enjoyed going on holiday with the people from Frazer Roberts which I know from my own experience would have been a difficult and tiring venture at times. Her career extended beyond closure of the hospital and her ability to create a homely environment really came to the fore when she worked in small community homes and supported living projects. She worked with staff and service users from many different backgrounds, origins, upbringings sexualities and age groups. Sometimes the people she supported did unusual and unpleasant things but she always displayed tolerance and acceptance towards everyone whatever their natures and behaviours
She was always very kind and considerate to me –when I first started visiting the family home she told everyone not to speak in patois as she felt it would be rude to do so as I would not understand what was said, a somewhat erroneous assumption given my experience by then of working with Jamaican colleagues for three years! Conversely, she and Mr Reid accorded me the respect of talking to me in broad Broken English because they knew that I understood them (usually!). To me that was a genuine and touching indicator that I was accepted as a true family member.
She always showed concern about me especially if she knew that I had been unwell or had difficulties in my life. She was very supportive when I lost my parents and other family members and always enquired about my northern family, especially my sister Linda and niece Katy who she had got to know well due to their many visits to Bristol
Which isn’t to that we never Had arguments and falling outs and I expect she followed her usual threat and put me in the diary sometimes—I’d have been rather disappointed if it she didn’t - but she never held grudges and we always resumed being on good terms.
She had a particular appreciation when people paid her small kindnesses such as when or Hannah sent her postcards or others brought her little gifts or my sister sent her a card with a little note – she really treasured things like that and put them on display for ages
I had the good fortune to visit Jamaica for a couple of weeks last year and was able to visit many places that she knew including Barton’s and Redcap River. She was absolutely delighted that I had visited so many places where she had spent her early years and loved to talk about where I had been
Others have mentioned her sense of humour and looking back I had more laughs with her than any other family member, often based on shared jokes and mutual jocular insults.
One of the ways she expressed her sense of fun was by bestowing nicknames on family members. The origin of some was very obvious. For instance she called Brian ‘the judge’ because he was a judge! However sometimes the origin was rather obscure as in the case of Kathryn: Kathryn became Kathryn Wheel and eventually ‘Wheelus’. About 42 years ago I became ‘Balanch’ and she was just as likely to call me that as Alan (or THE Alan if I had done something to upset her!
The first impressions that I had of her being a very imposing and formidable lady continued throughout the time I knew her- and it just seemed that she would avoid dying by the sheer force of will. I remember once that she became upset once whilst visiting us, marched out of the house very precipitously and immediately stepped straight onto a bus at the stop outside. It was as if he had summoned the bus by the strength of her personality to arrive at that specific time to accommodate her wishes!
Although she had becoming increasing frail and her mobility had deteriorated thanks to mainly Angela she was able to stay in her home of over 50 years where she had welcomed and received so many new family members, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
Her final illness was very short but long enough to allow everyone to say goodbye to her- all her children were able to visit her and most of her grandchildren. Throughout her final hours family members kept her company to her and playing her favourite hymns and she died surrounded by her children and others. In all my personal and professional life I have never know anyone have such a send off in their final hours and we are all blessed to have had that opportunity to say goodbye to her in that way and to have had her in our lives
In her final hours Angela talked to her about her legacy and others alluded to that during her service. I think we are all part of that legacy- children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members -every one that she met and on whom she had an impact- whether in family life church and work.

I will really miss baking you your favorite cherry and almond and lemon cake... I will miss your smile and the twinkle in your eye when you are about to be mischievous, your humming which was a sign that you disproved of something..
and more all fond memories to many to write here on this page

Dear Cousin Paulette and family,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your beloved mother. It was such a pleasure for me to meet her when I visited in 2021. Had I not acted on my curiosity to discover my genetic makeup, I would not have met your lovely family.
I could not believe it when your mum looked at me after I told her who my grandparents were and she said, " you are the little girl who asked me to tell her mum to send for you if I see her in England". When she said that, I remembered a lady from England visiting Mass Alfa and Aunt Lou in the 1970s. Your darling mum was so kind and sensitive that she did not have the heart to tell this little girl that she did not know her mum or that she did not live in London. How caring was that?
It was such a pleasure for me to have met your mum and I really enjoyed going down memory lane with her talking about Bartons. Cuz, all the best people come from Bartons. Another one who left the homeland has now been called to her Father's home, and may her beautiful soul rest in perpetual peace .

I can remember meeting Alice and Gang Gang in 1964 in Bristol they were both walking down the street when Alice called out to me saying are you Aunt Vi’s Son…. Gang Gang was so pleased to see me as she was close to my mum her cousin (Aunt Vi).
We met several times in Bartons before I left to come to England in 1962 and was so pleased to see familiar faces so far from home we remained in contact over the years. I was especially pleased to meet up with Alice 2 weeks before her passing. We met and talked about old times and remembered family members long since gone...
I was so shocked to hear that she had gone to be with Jesus she sounded so well and vibrant when last spoke.
My sincere condolences to the family

As a child growing up, my mother (Una Martin) always mentioned her sister Alice who lived in England. Every year we would get these beautiful Christmas cards from Sister Alice. I knew her voice long before I would meet her. As faith would have it, my brother and I finally met my Aunt Alice when I was 19 years old. I was struck by just how much she and Mum looked alike, and how kind, patient, thoughtful and just an overall wonderful person she was. Aunty Alice's mother was still alive at that time but she was unable to walk. So Granny invited us into her room and we all sat with Gran and talked, and laughed, and just enjoyed the day. Later before we left, Cousin Paulette and Cousin Nigel took us to see this huge bridge in Bristol. Literally the tallest bridge I had every been on in my life! The memory of meeting my Aunty in-person and spending that time with her, Granny and Uncle Reid has always stayed with me.
When I heard that Aunty Alice had passed, I was and am, truly heartbroken. I have been flooded with memories of that day, and forgotten conversations over the years. She was the first born of Alimont Martin children's, and the last of them to pass on. To me, she represented the last of our ancestral generation of hard working Martin's from a small farming community in Jamaica that only wanted for their children, and their children's children to do better and have more than they ever did. My sincere condelonces to the entire Family. Aunty Alice, Thank you for the legacy you have left behind; may you rest in eternal peace. You are loved in heaven, you were loved here on earth, and You will be dearly missed.
With love and gratitude, your niece, Francine Martin.

Dear Paulette and family you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
Weeping may endure for the night; joy will come in the morning.
Hold on to all those special and magical moment s as they will live for ever.
As your beautiful mother will remain in your heart forever and will talk about her as she would have loved that.
God Bless

A Limb Has Fallen
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says,
“Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times,
the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived
while I was strong.
Continue my heritage,
I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely
the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease,
my soul is at rest.
Remembering all,
how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions,
no matter how small.
Go on with your life,
don’t worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly,
so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes
we’re together again.”

One of Mum's favourite Verses framed at Home since 1964
Christ is the Head of this House, the unseen guest at every Meal the silent listener to every conversation.
This set the theme and tone for the family’s individual spiritual journeys.

"Memories of cousin Alice. My first memory of cousin Alice is as a child, I was told by my mother that she was the one who went to the post office to register my birth and gave me my name Lascelle. At the time I had never seen her in person and only saw pictures of her. When my mum passed away, cousin Alice came to Jamaica along with Paulette,Angela and Dorette to visit my Father(her Uncle). I was 16 years old at the time and I remember she got Basil to take us to Dunn's River Falls and we all had a great time. That was one of my fondest memories of her. I also remember coming to visit her and gang gang in 1990 in the UK and she bought me a Robe which I still have to this day. Aside from her natural beauty and charm, she was very loving charismatic and kind and that's how I will always remember her. Rest In Peace Cousin Alice. Lascelle Brown. Jamaica"
