Obituary of Herbert Sydney Harris
Herbert Harris was born in Coleford in Gloucestershire on June 10th 1929. The only son of Sydney Harris, a miner, and Ada (nee Herbert). Just after the end of the Second World War he joined the Royal Air Force in his teens and here he gained his nickname of "Bomber" Harris. He spent twenty-two years travelling the world and making new friends as he went. He met his future wife Margaret, also in the WRAF (Womens Royal Air Force), on the steps of the NAAFI. They married on February 12th 1955 at Badminton Church, Gloucestershire. They had three children, Roger, Ross and Jane over the next six years - in various parts of the world. He left the RAF in 1968 and, after a few years working for Rolls-Royce, he and Maggie and their children settled in Bristol and took over Black Lion Costumes where they ran the oldest costumier in Bristol for over thirty years. Between them they made it a most respected and admired business. After eventual retirement in 1995 Bomber and Maggie moved to Kingsway where they have been for over the past decade. He is succeeded by 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. And countless friends at home and round the globe.
