I worked with Jean in Kenya at Peponi Prep for just two years, in 1989. However, I remember her skill and love for teaching and with the warmth and friendliness with which she treated everyone. She was held in high regard by us all and I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I know she will be missed greatly. My love and best wishes go to her family at this time.

So sad that has Jean lost her long and brave fight. She was such a nice lady and we both felt like we had known her for ages the very first time we met her. Sending our love and thoughts to Simon, Ross, Clive, David and Min. We hope Dylan, Kieran and Ethan cherish and treasure their memories of their Grandma.

Although we knew Jean for a relatively short period of time, she always felt like a long-lost friend. She was extremely welcoming to both Peter and I in Dar es Salaam and an inspiration to all of the happy"Stitch and Bitch" sewing group ladies with her marvelous creations. Nothing was too much trouble for her.and her caring nature shone through from the moment you met Jean. What a pity she and Simon weren't able to spend more time in SA where we could at least continue this friendship.

My Happy Memories of Jean I first met Jean when we arrived at Teachers' College together, fresh out of school. Jean's home was very near the college and she immediately invited anyone and everyone to come for meals, a swim, and to meet her lovely family. The door was open and no-one was excluded. Jean's naturally-generous spirit was evident in those days and never changed. On completion of our teacher training Jean and I were posted to the same country school. I was privileged to enjoy a few more years of Jean's delightful companionship. One day we realised that the heavy stage curtains were too long. Typically, Jean offered to shorten them on her little sewing machine, and we did this together. It was characteristic of her unlimited way of thinking and wish to help and share things. I met Simon when he worked with National Parks in Zimbabwe, as a dashing young game ranger. I told Simon what a lovely group of girls I was teaching with, and invited him to dinner to meet them in our school dining room one evening. That afternoon I went to Jean with concern, saying, "A good friend is coming to dinner and would like to meet everyone, and they will all take their dinner to the TV and not chat." Ever-resourceful Jean replied, "We'll have to break the plug." Jean removed the fuse from the TV plug, a move that resulted in a beautiful wedding! Jean and I travelled together on a cruise ship to England, enjoying all the fun and deck sports during the days, and the long dancing nights. Jean came home quite soon, to Simon! I will always have Jean in my mind as generous, compassionate, understanding, warm, and fun to be with. She could laugh at situations we got into, lightening the burden and finding a solution. I remember Jean writing this profound statement on a First Grader's Report: " _ _ _ _ _ _ must learn the difference between what is important and what is not important." I commented to her that this is a life-lesson we are all trying to learn. What is important now is for us to know the blessings Jean brought into our lives, and that she will always be cared for and in heaven, at peace.
