Thomas Cousins

Obituary of Thomas Cousins

Thomas was born on the 4th of the 4th, 2014 at not quite 4:44pm, but 5:04pm was close enough for him. Tom was a happy, healthy little boy meeting his milestones: rolling, bouncing, babbling and, we felt, not far off walking until at around 10 months Thomas became sick. What we thought was an innocent vomiting bug turned out to be the beginning of a new and very unexpected chapter in all of our lives. Tom was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease and more specifically Leigh's Syndrome. Once we received confirmation of Tom's diagnosis we knew that his time with us all would be limited and very precious. Despite this we had masses of fun with Tom, which included a fantastic holiday to Majorca, endless forest walks, paint and play time, hide-and-seek, chasing his cousins and grandparents, and lots of laughing and smiling. His weekly schedule was packed thanks to Mum and all the amazing groups out there for children, disabled or not. Weekends were spent on the road visiting family and friends, which Tom loved, and the drive allowed him to sleep saving energy for all that giggling. Thomas was such an amazing little boy and has given us all so much joy and happiness. We have so many special and amazing memories of Thomas, but for us he will simply be the happiest, smiliest, blondest, curliest, most special little cheeky monkey. <br /> Donations Although flowers are lovely, we would prefer instead that you donate money to some special charities that have helped Tom and us. The first is Children's Hospice South West. We were lucky enough to enjoy three wonderful weekends at Charlton Farm hospice in Bristol, where they offer families with children with life-limiting illnesses respite, time together and support during the final days of your child's life. The teams here really are the best and during Tom's final hours, and after he had died, he received the most wonderful care. We were then looked after and supported in the difficult days that followed by the whole team, and words cannot express how thankful we are and were for that time. The second charity is the Lily Foundation who fund reasearch into a cure for mitochondiral disease, for which there isn't one yet, and offer support and advice to those affected by this cruel disease. They have helped us by providing answers and support for Tom's rare condition and through this we've met other families in the same situation and together have learnt to cope with the difficulties that we have experienced. You can either donate during the service or online using the links above. Please join us afterwards We would also love for you to join us afterwards to share some of your memories of Tom with us. We've yet to confirm a venue but will let you know during the celebration. The dress code is relaxed, if you prefer to wear black, please do. But if you'd rather wear something bright and colourful, you're very welcome. We just want you to be comfortable.
