David was an inspiration to me when I was an undergraduate at the University of Bristol. He was always so well prepared, well informed and passionate about geotechnics and our learning. I have continued working in civil engineering and have reason to think of him often, in his salmon jumpers, and will continue to do so with much fondness and gratitude. Regretfully I am not able to be at the funeral today. David was a very valued colleague for many years, respected greatly by staff and students alike. He had particular concerns for technical and practical excellence, fairness and student welfare. I also remember his excellent musicianship, joy of life and diverse interests, for example setting up a theodolite at midnight on the surveying field course to observe the moons of Jupiter! He will be greatly missed.

I had only sporadic contact with David since we both left King's in 1969, the last time in a brief email exchange seven years ago. Sadly, we never did manage to meet up again, but I remember him as a charming and gracious person. We would like to send our condolences to Sophie and Pip, Megan, Rebecca and Holly and all the Nash family. We remember David as the kind and friendly father who used to wheel Sophie to school on the back of his bike. We also particularly remember one Christmas Eve, seven or eight years ago, when I came round with all the children and David played Christmas carols on the piano whilst we all sang - all of us adults got the giggles at Henry's very loud singing for such a small boy! We send love and hugs to Pip and all her girls. Not all men can carry off a purple jumper, but David could! I have lovely memories of David at our kitchen table last summer, drinking tea and chatting, his superb concert at St George's and the love of music and sheer joy on his face as he played. Most of all I remember how he always made you feel as if you were just the person he wanted to see at that moment. He was a wonderful man and will be missed but not forgotten. Xxxx
