I have just heard the devastating news about Alan's death six months ago. He was an excellent colleague at FirstGroup and we shared a few games of cricket in 2001. After that, I occasionally was able to have amusing conversations with him on the train. A real loss to every who knew him.

Dear Polly & Family, I did not know Alan very well as you will be aware but the Alan that I did know is entirely recognisable in these messages. I was delighted to hear that he was interested in joining me on my recent Stag weekend and he was a predictably funny, insightful, and genial, companion. Did I say he was funny? He was tremendously funny, in the most understated way. Whenever I think of Alan I think of that smile, that slightly sideways look, and the twinkle in his eye. Usually making some comment on life that was revealed, by his insight, to be faintly ridiculous. Despite the sad circumstances, I am smiling as I think of him. I know that my brother held him in the very highest esteem and, in my far too few outings with him, I came to understand why. I remember very fondly our short holiday with you all at Adam and Mimi's house in France and I can only say I am envious of those who are able to leave much fuller tributes here by virtue of their much greater relationship. My deepest condolences to you all. Jan Wiszniewski

Dear Polly We would like to express our sincere condolences for your loss. Alan lives on in our memories as a much loved and respected player and friend who inspired others with his zest, humour and good company. On the field he helped and encouraged others but had his own considerable skills, swinging the ball like a banana and turning himself from a number 11 batsman to a very useful opener. We feel so fortunate to have enjoyed his friendship. He will forever be ‘Cockers' in the best cricketing tradition. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Alan worked in a different section of First from myself but from a common interest in Bristol and in sport, I did have the occasional opportunity to chew the cud with him whilst on the train to/from work or else at the bar. As a result, I never know Alan ‘that well' but I do recall from those brief discussions that there was far more to know about him, as a family man and as a colleague, than the little I did learn. It is so sad that only with his passing, and reading the condolences, do I get the opportunity to learn a little more about him. One has to respect a man who declines tickets for an England-Wales game so as to be with his family. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. As already noted, he was taken far too early.

Alan was a lovely guy who would always stop and talk to us however busy he was. He had a very dry wit which we shall miss at our neighbourhood gatherings. The last time we were all together was on a lovely sunny day, drinking wine and chatting in a neighbours garden. That's how we shall remember him. He was on top form that day. Cheers Alan! All our love to Polly, Lily and Sophie. xxx

I met Alan for the first time in 1997 when he was contemplating his first move out of practice into industry and I had just transferred down from London office. Since then, we worked together on various projects and shared an office for several years after I joined him at First. Alan and I developed a close working relationship and deep friendship which I will always treasure. As a blow-in from Ireland, Alan, in so many ways, represented to me the quintessential Englishman (with Scottish roots - as Alan would remind you of) with lots of admirable qualities - kind, modest, tolerant, respectful, a little bit grumpy, witty, with a big open mind, hugely intelligent with a very finely tuned brain, and, last but not least, an infectious laugh and smile. Whenever we met up, a smile and a giggle was not far away. We seemed to complement each other, and I look back on those days with so many happy memories. He was always there to act as a sounding board and advisor on all work matters; and, then, tried to teach me the laws of cricket in his spare time, or put the world to rights. We shared a passion for sport, particularly, cricket and rugby. Huge admiration for the way he loved the game of rugby for its beauty and not the partisan way I did. Hard to pick out specific memories, but there are 3 as I write this: - listening to Alan and Nick reliving the highlights of the World Darts on the first day back at work every January - "….ahh, sure Padraig, you need to get Sky and watch the darts…..fantastic….". I had a significant birthday in October 2013 but was not in the mood for celebrating. Alan single-handedly organised a wonderful day for me at Bristol Rugby with some close friends and fellow rugby buddies - the sun shone as well and Bristol won - I will never forgot that act of kindness. …and perhaps my fondest memory was just before Christmas 2015, when we got together, as we did many times, with Polly and the girls and Dave's family. Our children put on a mini classical concert for the parents. Lily plays the cello and Sophie, the violin and piano. I caught Alan's eye during one of the pieces and we both smiled and nodded. He was so so proud of his girls - a wonderful moment captured forever as I remember my dear friend Alan who is now sadly gone from this life. To Polly, Lily, Sophie, his Mum and Dad, Su and Pascal and family, I offer my deepest sympathies and thoughts at your tragic loss. We will support you in whatever way we can. Goodbye, my friend, I will miss you more than I want to think about at the moment. Padraig, Ceridwen and Mollie x

Dear Polly I have known and worked with Alan for decades on rail matters. He was the master of the financially complex in a sector which thrives on complexity. He was always a pleasure to be with - bringing in dry humour and a real concern for colleagues. I know also how much he cared for you and your daughters - even declining England-Wales rugby opportunities to be with you at the theatre: he loved his sport but there was no contest! We were all so shocked and saddened at Alan's early passing - our thoughts and prayers are with you and you family. Simon

Hi Alan, we watched South Africa play India at Newlands yesterday. But you know that already, of course, because you were with me. We discussed every boundary, every play and miss, every dismissal, every review. Mimi even managed to find a Veuve Clicquot bar! Polly said that you didn't have to understand cricket to enjoy it. She was right! You are still in my head and will always be in my heart. I am looking forward to you joining me at Twickenham and The Crucible later this year. Speak soon. Adam
