In honour of my father, a grandfather and a great grandfather and all the ancestors who have gone before you. The final seven months of your life that you shared with me were at times challenging and filled with emotional ups and downs. Towards the end though, you did open your heart to share some of your truths, wisdom and understanding with me. Near the end, you proved to be a man who had come to this world with a light, a big heart only to have that light smothered by the turmoils of life. You expressed your frustrations and how those frustrations became compounded by the recent lockdown rules and having you classified a shielded person, these unexpected challenges abruptly halted your plans and you became vexed. Never the less amid these setbacks and your obvious angst because of them you still had more to give in the way of teachings and quoting parables. We both laughed loudly when one day you told me a key to living. In your strong Jamaican drawl said If you see a man in the day, you don't have to catch fire stick to see him in the night Wise sayings of the old Jamaican Africans you proudly informed me. My father enjoyed telling stories to my sons about his time in the army and with great enthusiasm, he gave them lessons in making Jamaican turn cornmeal and fry dumplings in his unique way. During those final weeks, my father revealed profound historical family events to which have in turn helped me to understand him better. Thank you for your precious gift in making a voice recording of some of your final words, words that are filled with your unique potent wisdom smothered with your sense of humour. Father, you have left me with a knowledge and an added energy that I will respect and use wisely throughout the rest of my life. Indeed, during your last weeks here we have been blessed by being allowed to have closure whilst you were still alive. I also acknowledge that what you wanted to say to us all on that day when we came together is simply that you loved us. You have left me with strength and encouragement to continue on life's meandering journey because of this, and the preciousness of your final words will be with me forever. God bring you eternal peace. Journey well father One Love, your son.
